About Jen Tough Gallery + Workshops
“A fabulous instructor, gorgeous venue, wonderful staff, great fellow artists...what's not to love?”
The gallery is open during workshops. Learn more about our gallery here.
Bay Area Location: Our gallery and workshop spaces are in the historic Benicia Arsenal in Benicia, California. The arsenal is a large area comprised of many former military buildings, and the building we inhabit is a stately brick structure built in 1878.
The Arsenal has a long history of artists working there, including Robert Arneson and Judy Chicago, who created the Birth Project here. Continuing in this tradition, the majority of spaces in the Arsenal are now artist studios which are open early May for Open Studios. It’s a thriving community of artists anchored by our neighbor Arts Benicia, who also have an incredible gallery a few hundred yards from our gallery and workshop spaces.
Directions: 940 Tyler St, #29, Benicia, California, 94510
By car, we’re located 20 minutes north of Berkeley, 30 minutes south of Napa, and 45 minutes from San Francisco. You can take a walk-on ferry from San Francisco to Vallejo, and from there it’s an easy 12 minute drive via Uber or Lyft. There is plenty of free parking around the Arsenal.
If you haven’t visited us before, we highly recommend printing our Arsenal map below prior to your departure. The Arsenal area can be confusing to navigate the first time, and often GPS can point people in the wrong direction. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Workshop Spaces: Our workshops are held in our project space or in a lofty ballroom inside the Arsenal, close to our gallery. Exposed brick, 18 foot ceilings, arched doorways and a leafy courtyard with fountain create a tranquil and inspirational space where it’s easy for participants to relax and focus on their creativity. Our primary workshop studio is a 900 sq ft space with 18 foot ceilings and transom windows that look out onto Bouganvila vines and courtyard.
Amenities / Dining: We provide free coffee, tea and bottled water throughout your time with us. Depending on the length of workshop, we often bring in lunch, or you can take a short 3 minute drive to quaint downtown Benicia for dozens of dining options. See here for suggestions.
